Crisis (Danger & Opportunity)

This is the kanji symbol for crisis. It is composed of two symbols, one is "danger", the other is "opportunity". Danger & Opportunity.
This symbol & translation touch me in a certain way. Diabetes is definitely a crisis, and can be very dangerous. Some times, everything seems like a crisis. Just getting through another day of dealing with everything can be a crisis. At the same time, it is an opportunity, that when leveraged positively, can have a big positive impact on your life.

No, it isn't. It shortens life expectancy by 25 years (complete with the obligatory 10 years of ghastly complications prior to that).

I'm sorry for ranting on you, but I feel things like that make light of the real situation. You often see feel good stories about how a type I diabetic can live a "normal life," but they always seem to forget to mention that that 5 year old type 1 will count himself lucky if he sees his 45th birthday.

But you see, diabetes has already impacted my life in a positive way. I would not be who I am now if it weren't for the struggles, challenges and successes I've already dealt with.

So, I guess, the way I see it, is regardless of what *may* happen, I have already reaped some positives from dealing with diabetes.

I was exactly 5 when I was diagnosed, and will be 30 this year. I have dealt with diabetes for 25 years already, and will most definately see my 45th birthday, and many past that.

Diabetes is not an automatic sentance to a terrible complication filled future. Granted, I am sure I will deal with my share of complications, but my attitude and outlook will dictate how those complications affect my life.

Hey - just found your blog. The Irony... I have diabetes... and I have this symbol tattooed on my body. This is strange. I may be back. So strange.
