When D-Instincts Go Right...

Logbook courtesy of Kevin

I had an awesome day on Wednesday.

Started out a little high (179 mg/dl), dropped into range and stayed there most of the day. I had three lows, two of them at terribly inconvenient times (before basketball and before my drive home). The rest of the day was awesome feedback that I was doing things right.

I ended the day with a homemade fruit smoothie.

That I didn't bolus for.

Yep, that's right. I had over 50 grams of carbohydrates, and didn't take any mealtime insulin for it.

I just had a feeling...I call it D-Instinct.

In this case I felt like I had been fighting lows, that I had not been experiencing my normal mealtime spikes, and that I worked real hard at basketball for the second day in a row.

It worked out great, this time. I started at 88 mg/dl. A little more than an hour later I was at 111 mg/dl. Three hours later I was at 148 mg/dl. I ended up landing at 132 mg/dl much later in the night. Not too bad!

Don't worry though - I have another post coming up soon that covers the other side of this coin...

I love it when that happens, but I would've thought that on a pump you'd've lowered your basils instead.

I have done this before with similar results. Don't you ask yourself, "Holy crap what would have happened had I bolused?"

Of course we know what would happen but it is freaky and scary to think about.

Oh oh oh, I had a d-instinct go right yesterday too! I had a 145 with no IOB which I would normal down almost a unit for. I felt off, took nothing for it, 30 minutes later was 82. Congrats on your great day!

Yes, I sometimes just go with intuition (although is it really intuition - or, are we still doing a b'zillion calculations that we're just not aware of?)

I find that I can make decent judgments based on how worn down my body and muscles feel. I know that my body is going to be sucking up all the available glucose to do the required muscle repairs, so I back off on my normal doses.

It's totally ad hoc, though, and I should put in the effort to quantify it, but like you point out: it sure is nice when your instincts guide you in the right direction.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

I believe my daughter (11 years old) also have this "D-instinct". She is almost always right and I am almost always wrong. (So she can blame me for her not so beautiful bg-curves!)

Keep it up!

Isn't it nice when you get a great day like that? (though the incovenient lows are a bit annoying) I recently had a lunchtime experience where I was low, ate lunch, and decided to not bolus when I normally would have- and it's a good thing I didn't.

Awesome blood sugar day Scott!!! And I know what you mean, sometimes you just have to go with your instincts! I felt low the other night, and only a half hour before I had tested at 150 with .1 units left on board. I checked and sure enough I was 60. Later on that night while sleeping I felt like I was dropping again, so I just popped three glucose tabs (foolish, I know, I should've tested too!) and woke up at 98, so I must have been a smidge low! Oh the joys of life, right?
